Family Migration

The family stream of Australia’s Migration program allows Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor some categories of relatives to migrate to or stay permanently in Australia

The four main categories of family migration are:

  1. 1. Partner Migration
  2. 2. Parent Migration
  3. 3. Child Migration
  4. 4. Other family migration

There are various subclasses in this visa steam and applicants may apply either in or outside of Australia

Partner Migration

These visas are for people who are married to or in a de facto relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Australia also has a visa for “independent” partners of Australian citizens, permanent
residents and eligible New Zealand citizens. This visa is often used for same sex partners of Australians. Partner migration visas can be applied for either in or outside of Australia.

Prospective Marriage Visa

The prospective marriage visa is a temporary visa for people outside of Australia
who are engaged to be married to an Australian citizen, permanent resident or
eligible New Zealand citizen. This visa is valid for nine (9) months in which
time the applicant must marry their Australian partner.

Parent migration

Parents may be eligible to migrate to Australia if their child in Australia is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand resident. There are two categories in parent migration.

  1. a: Parent category: Parent may be eligible to migrate to Australia if their child in Australia is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand resident.
  2. b: Contributory parent category: Applicants wishing to apply for this visa pay a fee towards their ongoing health costs. Contributory parent may be eligible to migrate to Australia if there child in Australia is Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand resident. This visa category receives priority processing

Child Migration

The parent of a child must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible
New Zealand resident.

There are three different categories in child migration:

  1. a: Dependent child
  2. b: Orphan relative
  3. c: Adopted child

Other family migration

This visa is for the people for dependent relatives and/or carers of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

There are three categories for this migration:

  1. a: Dependant and/or Remaining relative category
  2. b: Aged dependent Relative
  3. c: Care category
